Sealant: what is needed for and how to change
Even the highest quality window structures sooner or later become worthless. There are many reasons for this: improper installation, cheap components, lack of proper care. The latter factor is the most frequent cause of deterioration in the operational properties of the structure. As a result, dust, dirt, cold air and noise begin to get into the room through small openings. To eliminate all this, it will take replacement of a sealant of plastic windows.
This process is quite simple and can be carried out without involving a window repair wizard. However, if you do not have the necessary experience or you simply do not want to bother with dismantling and installing a new element, it is better to call a specialist.
What is a seal?
Replacing sealing rubber on windows begins with the definition of the model of the element. Knowing what a removable design should be, it will be possible to quickly select the necessary part and speed up the process of its installation.
The seal is an ordinary layer of rubber. This element has a relief structure and is located around the entire perimeter of the metal-plastic construction. The part provides a snug fit between the wings and the profile, thus preventing the entry of cold air, dust and dirt into the room.
Window seal replacement required when it is stretched or deformed, which leads to a decrease in the heat-shielding properties of the structure and the appearance of condensate.
There are three types of element:
- EPDM;
- TPE;
These types of markings indicate the material of which the removable element is made.
Rules for the selection of replacement parts
Before ordering a service replacement of sealing gum in windows, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the main types of removable element.
So, for example, a part marked with TPE is not resistant to severe frosts, and the elements of the VMQ model have excellent performance, but they are very expensive. The most popular gum today is EPDM. This part is resistant to severe frosts and sharp temperature jumps, is not subject to the destructive influence of alkalis and acids, and retains its elasticity and good performance properties over a long period of time.
Window seal replacement can be carried out using adhesive elements and conventional models. The first option is similar to adhesive tape, but it can only be used for seams between the window opening and the profile. To seal the sash, it is strongly not recommended to buy it.
The usual part is made of rubber. It completely repeats the grooves of the profile, which ensures a high level of heat saving.
Parts repair steps
Replacing the rubber seal in plastic windows begins by dismantling the old part. To do this, grab the element in the middle and pull it. After this, clean the surface with a soapy solution. When the structure dries, it must be wiped with alcohol or a regular degreasing liquid.
Next, glue the corners. If you are using an element with an adhesive backing, you can skip this step. To attach a normal part, glue is required at the corners of the profile. It can be silicone, construction or ordinary PVA. While the base dries, proceed with the preparation of the part. Make sure the item is the right size, and cut off if necessary.
When the adhesive base dries, you can proceed with the installation of the rubber element. This can be done by hand, but for greater reliability, it is better to use construction tools.
